Shop Skinnygirl Celebrates Plus Size Women

Today, the average American woman is between a size 14 and 16. So why has it taken so long for retailers to provide these women a selection of fashions to wear?

It all seems to originate in design schools where students are typically given the smallest mannequins to design clothes for. Until just recently, one of the top design schools, Parsons School of Design, had only one plus size mannequin per 1,000 students in 2016.

It did not help that for the past century, the fashion elite of the world had also idealized the smallest figures to represent the fashion industry.

Design student, Nayyara Chue, protested through a statement that encouraged the school to set an example for others by including plus size mannequins in each classroom to support designers ushering in a new era of body inclusivity.

“The school should keep its word on housing the designers of tomorrow, and adopting progressiveness as their motto” she said.

Several 21st-century fashion designers like Chromat and Christian Siriano have broken the mold and challenged our perceptions of fashion and beauty standards for all women by including curvier models on the runway.

Over the last couple of decades, plus size fashion, even in its limited availability, has transformed so much. Designers have realized that they can’t simply make the same small silhouettes larger. They have to get to know what looks best on several different body types.

Most runway models for the past hundred years have been of the rectangular body shape, the least common body shape of all. Designers finally recognizing the need for plus size clothing will continue to burst doors right open for designing silhouettes for many more body types in the near future (fingers crossed!).

Today, you can find a greater selection than ever, yet we still lack selections in traditional stores. Many brands, some that carry all sizes and some that are exclusively plus size, are revolutionizing the way plus size clothing is designed and purchased.

Ecommerce has opened up a whole new world for plus size fashion.

Now October 6th is officially Plus Size Appreciation Day! And Shop Skinnygirl is so proud to be one of the online retailers holding higher standards of body inclusivity and value of accurately representing the amazing diversity of the world's women.
